Mission Experience

In March 2025, I traveled to Honduras with the Global Medical Missions Alliance (GMMA), an organization at the University of Georgia. This trip was unusual because it took place in the jungle. Each day, we relocated between different mission compounds and set up clinics at local churches or public gathering areas. Through this experience, I was able to admire the beauty of God’s creation—not only in nature but also in the people I met.
The mission gave me a firsthand look at healthcare disparities in underserved communities. One of my main responsibilities was triage, where I took patients’ vitals—such as heart rate and respiratory rate—and collected demographic information like age and date of birth. We did all of this while communicating in Spanish. Having studied Spanish throughout middle and high school, I found it incredibly rewarding to converse with patients in their native language.
Beyond triage, we guided patients through their entire visit—from taking vitals to seeing the doctor and then picking up medication at the pharmacy table. We encountered a wide range of conditions, including muscle pain, stomach bugs, and headaches. What I especially enjoyed was sharing my faith journey and asking patients about theirs. It filled me with joy to see so many people in Honduras who already knew Jesus Christ. It reminded me of how God’s presence reaches even the most remote places.

Interacting with the children was especially touching. Their openness in talking about Jesus and their involvement in their faith communities deeply moved me. Every patient I met welcomed me with kindness and openness, even though many had limited access to healthcare, electricity, or other resources compared to what we often take for granted.
Another part of the mission was delivering public health presentations on topics like fitness and dental hygiene. This was impactful because many villages had little to no access to healthcare—some had only one doctor, while others had none. I met patients who needed glasses but had no way to get them and others who suffered chronic dental pain due to a lack of routine care. Witnessing these disparities firsthand shifted my perspective on healthcare accessibility and highlighted the importance of preventative care. As someone hoping to enter the healthcare field, I found this truly eye-opening.

Outside of our busy clinic hours, we spent time worshiping in the evenings and meeting in small groups in the mornings. Even after long, tiring days, slowing down to reflect and praise the Lord for the opportunity to serve was incredibly rewarding. I learned to see worship as a way to recharge spiritually and to remember that our strength comes from Him.
Another new experience for me was going on prayer walks and hikes. On this trip, we did one along the beach and another on a mountain. These times were reflective and empowering; slowing down to talk with God while admiring His creation was beautiful.
Overall, this mission trip taught me the importance of connecting with people from different backgrounds and deepened my understanding of what it means to serve others. Sharing the gospel is accomplished not only through words but also through actions, love, and humility. Seeing the faith of the people we met strengthened my own, as their joy and devotion were inspiring.
This trip was a powerful reminder that God works through us and uses our experiences to transform not only our hearts but also the hearts of others.
